1997 Fire in Turin Guarini Chapel

Fire Almost Destroys the Shroud of Turin for the Second Time in History

Shortly after 11 p.m. fire broke out in Turin's Guarini Chapel, and threatened the Shroud's bulletproof display case. Turin fireman Mario Trematore used a sledgehammer to break open the case and the Shroud was removed to safety. The high altar end of the cathedral and part of the Royal Palace directly adjoining the Chapel were also damaged by the fire.
