double superficiality
Double Superficiality
Double superficiality was an important discovery because it virtually eliminates fakery and artistic methods while giving credence to a hypothesis that a natural chemical reaction formed the images. In 2004, researchers, Giulio Fanti and Roberto Maggiolo of the University of Padua in Italy, reported finding a faint second face on the backside of the cloth. They published their findings in the peer-reviewed scientific Journal of Optics (April 14, 2004). Though the facial image was confirmed scientifically, it is not easy to see, unaided.
second face discovery
By filtering out background noise with special software, the second face becomes clearly visible. The hair, mustache and beard are particularly noticable.
